Anna Valdez: Modern Matisse; Interview by
Megan O'Sullivan
"Meet Anna Valdez, the Oakland based painter who can best be described as Matisse meets Frida Kahlo meets brainy anthropologist. She's a rising phoenix of sorts, defying the odds of leading a coveted career in painting. She's managed to maintain authenticity and coherence between her interests, her art, and the space she works in. Her studio is a fantastical greenhouse, filled with artifacts, books, and small quirky objects that you can also spy in her works. Pots and plants hang from the ceilings, purple vines drape from above, and after spending enough time in this room, you can’t quite tell reality from the paintings lining the walls. This is sensory overload at its finest. Valdez’s color arrays and botanical collections fill her studio with life, and it’s clear this visual, full of vibrancy and whim, is a mere window into her thoughts."

Everyday Objects with Anna Valdez
"Anna Valdez creates still life portraits of everyday objects, elevating them and inviting you to consider their importance and role in our daily lives, like many artists before her who have treated mudane subjects with reverence. But her compositions are unique and her content is clearly personal, with a pervasive element of mystery that keeps catching our eye."

Andrew L. Rogers and Anna Valdez
"We live in a time where social media has provided a platform that encourages us to gather, curate and exhibit our ideal lifestyle. It is with the selection of objects that we convey different facets of our identity. In a similar sense, painting as an idilic medium, is free to be as the artist wishes and yet, abides by a level of responsibility to contain specificity as a method of meaning. Artists Anna Valdez and Andrew L. Rogers work rigorously with this ideology. The paintings in this exhibition consider the act of selecting objects, forms, shapes, patterns to examine our surroundings."

"Re/Site includes two distinct bodies of work, Still Lives and Masks and Veils. Her still lives depict objects that are personal and steeped in family history such as quilts her mother made, family cookbooks and her own clothing. Through the details of her private space, she links people, rituals, and objects as she plants a discussion of culture in the same way that an archeological dig may illuminate the history of a people."

By Moray Mair
"Anna Valdez‘s still life paintings are infused with the bright colours of her native California, the bright world of the west coast giving life to a series of self portraits reflected through the domestic objects littered across her room.
Each of these paintings appear to be an exercise in craft, a desire to create a wonderful pattern of life through intricate fabrics and juxtapositions of colour, line and form but look a little closer, deeper, more thoughtfully and you’ll find Valdez everywhere in these compositions. In her books. albums, poetry, her choices of fabric, the flowers and shrubs that decorate her house and the light that dances across her objects. Each telling its own story, a thread that makes up the tapestry of life."

Triple Trifecta of People, Places and Things
review by Oscar Laluyan
"Anna Valdez has meticulous myriads of composition in her still life paintings that are more than a collection of things. Each pattern and object are bullet points or breathing marks to a rhythmic oeuvre that evoked a simple view but in execution took years to render as effortless. Her tableaux and scenes of quilted backdrops with plants impart the slight scent of Henri Matisse but in a more casual mood. The effect is familiar, comforting but never on the territory of mundane. No, this is the real thing where art chooses to emanate life and feeling to its viewer. The kaleidoscopic effect of the works by Valdez made you want to see more or perhaps sew yourself into the tapestry she pieced".
